HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
WHEREAS, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is honored each year on January 27th, recognizing
the tragic events of the Holocaust and recalling the systematic persecution and genocide of approximately six
million Jewish people along with other ethnic and religious groups who were targeted in this time. This year’s
recognition has additional significance with 2025 marking the 80th year since the end of World War II and the
Holocaust; and
WHEREAS, Holocaust Remembrance Day serves as an important testament to the dangers of hatred, bigotry,
racism, and prejudice. Education and remembrance of the Holocaust helps future generations guard against acts
of genocide and recognize the detriment of religious and ethnic intolerance and violence. This becomes even more
crucial as the number of living survivors decreases. Sharing their stories honors the courage and perseverance of
those who were imprisoned in concentration camps, as well as those who risked their lives to liberate them. We
honor both the lives that have been lost, as well as those that are still with us today; and
WHEREAS, The City of Palo Alto honors all survivors on this day, acknowledging those who live in Palo
Alto and have made valuable contributions to the community. The City is committed to fostering an environment
that celebrates diversity and ensures that all feel safe, included, and respected.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Ed Lauing, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby recognize January 27th, 2025,
as Holocaust Remembrance Day in the City of Palo Alto and encourage all citizens to come together to raise
awareness for Holocaust Remembrance Day, and combat hate and antisemitism wherever it exists in our
community.
Presented: January 27th, 2025
