HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-07-12 Charles Scott Sr.Proclamation __________________________ Greer Stone, Mayor RECOGNIZING CHARLES SCOTT'S 100th BIRTHDAY AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF PALO ALTO WHEREAS, Charles Scott was born on July 12, 1924, and is celebrating his 100th birthday this year; and WHEREAS, after his graduation from Haskell Indian Institute, Charles served in the U.S. Navy on submarines during World War II and subsequently in the Coast Guard as a Chief Petty Officer; following his service, he moved to Palo Alto in 1960 with his wife Jean Scott and his children Charles Scott Jr., Judy Scott, and Donna Scott; and WHEREAS, Charles Scott was a founding member and active participant in the West Bayshore Residents Association, and along with his neighbors and Block Captains he helped to achieve a permanent park designation for the land between Amarillo Avenue and Colorado Avenue, leading to the creation of Greer Park; and WHEREAS, on September 27, 2010, the Palo Alto City Council named the "Greer Park Phase IV" plot of land "Scott Meadow" in recognition of Charles and Jean Scott's decades of effort and service in creating and continuously improving Greer Park for the Palo Alto community; and WHEREAS, Charles Scott has volunteered throughout his lifetime with Covenant Presbyterian Church, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Campfire Girls, and with tutoring children in local elementary schools through the Avenidas program; and WHEREAS, Charles Scott has developed and maintained deep friendships over the decades with innumerable Palo Alto residents of all generations and backgrounds. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto do hereby commend Charles Scott for his lifelong commitment to his community and contributions to the City of Palo Alto, and do honor his many achievements in bringing people together to create a healthy civic environment.
