HONORING ANN MARQUART
WHEREAS, Ann Marquart founded Project Sentinel as a non-profit agency in 1971 in Palo Alto, California,
with a group of leaders from the corporate, educational, and labor communities to address housing issues and
discrimination; and
WHEREAS, Ann believes in the common good, equality, the rule of law, and the principle of fairness to
address housing issues and the use of communication, mediation, and education efforts first whenever possible to
help solve housing issues before litigation, all off which are a fundamental part of Project Sentinel; and
WHEREAS, Project Sentinel has assisted hundreds of thousands of clients since its founding and is the
largest Fair Housing Agency certified in Northern California by the US Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD); and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto supports fair housing efforts to eliminate discrimination in housing and
recognizes the benefits of Project Sentinel to educate home seekers, property managers, and property owners on
federal and state housing laws, and to investigate complaints of illegal housing discrimination ; and
WHEREAS, both Ann Marquart and Project Sentinel strongly believe that having adequate housing is a
fundamental need and right for everyone. Ann has played a crucial role in creating a community where stable
housing is available, ensuring that everyone's housing rights and responsibilities are acknowledged and
safeguarded. She has also made sure that every resident has equal opportunities to access housing and legal
protections;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City Council, do
hereby commend Ann Marquart for her contributions of over 5 decades of dedication and excellent service to the
Palo Alto community.
