HONORING UNIVERSITY A.M.E. ZION CHURCH
WHEREAS, the 156th Session of the California Annual Conference of the Western Episcopal District of the
African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church will be held from Thursday, May 30th to Saturday, June 1st; and
WHEREAS, the leadership of the Western Episcopal District is the Presiding Prelate Bishop Brian R.
Thompson Sr. and Missionary Supervisor Rev. Felica R. Thompson, whose dedication and guidance have been
instrumental in the outreach and community development of the district; and
WHEREAS, the Conference is being held in the City of Palo Alto at the University African Methodist
Episcopal Zion Church, which celebrated its 105th Anniversary this year, marking over a century of service and
commitment to the Palo Alto community; and
WHEREAS, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Kaloma A. Smith, the University AME Zion Church has
been a beacon for our community, providing hope and space for people for many years; and
WHEREAS, the California Conference has indelibly impacted Northern California with churches in the
Bay Area and Central Valley, serving the needs of the community for the past 156 years, including feeding the
hungry, caring for those in need, loving everyone, especially the widowed and the orphaned, and standing for
justice; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of its Bishop and Missionary Supervisor, the churches of this conference
have emerged from the COVID pandemic more focused than ever on the mission of continuing their tireless
efforts to serve and uplift the community in times of darkness; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council,
do hereby recognize and honor the 156th Session of the California Annual Conference of the Western Episcopal
District of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. We commend the University AME Zion Church for its
unwavering commitment and significant contributions to the Palo Alto Community.
