HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-05-20 Foster Care Awareness Month Foster Care Awareness Month WHEREAS, It's a time to recognize that we can all play a vital part in transforming the lives of children and youth in foster care. It is also a time to deeply appreciate our caregivers and raise awareness about the critical need for more committed, nurturing, and consistent families where children in foster care cannot just survive, but truly thrive. WHEREAS, in Santa Clara County, over 600 children live in out-of-home care, and approximately half of these children need a stable, loving, and supportive home. While there are currently 151 active foster/resource homes that provide care for these children, there is still a significant need for more foster/resource families. By becoming a foster/resource family, you can make a positive impact on a child's life and provide them with the safety, stability, and nurturing environment they need. WHEREAS, the Department of Family & Children’s Services recognizes the crucial role of the community in supporting foster/resource families. Throughout the month of May, there are hundreds of community events across the country being done to appreciate, retain, recruit, and most importantly, support foster/resource parents. WHEREAS, all children, regardless of their circumstances, deserve a safe, loving, nurturing, accepting, and consistent place to live. A Resource Family provides exactly that, a home where a child can focus on being just that—a child. By opening our hearts and homes, we, too, can help make all the difference in the life of a child in need. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognize May as Foster Care Awareness Month. This is a time for us to come together, raise awareness, and take action to support the children in our community.
