Designation of March 18-24, 2024, as National Senior Games Week
WHEREAS, Senior Games are an integral part of communities throughout the United States and Canada,
including Palo Alto; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games organizations such as the 18th Annual Bay Area Senior Games offer Olympic-style
multi-sport competitions for adults aged 50-100+ that engage over 100,000 people nationally and 2500 athletes locally
each year; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games offer the camaraderie and challenge of competitive sports to older adults and promote
health, well-being and active aging among participants; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games encourage regular physical activity which is associated with many health benefits,
including lower risk of eight types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, fall-related injuries;
and
WHEREAS, Senior Games foster community and friendships that help reduce social isolation among older adults
and foster well-being; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games tackle ageism by celebrating possibilities for community members ages 50 and
above; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games create meaningful intergenerational connections between senior athletes, their
family members, volunteers and spectators; and
WHEREAS, Senior Games create positive economic impact and social impact in Palo Alto and Bay Area
communities through volunteerism and community outreach; and
WHEREAS, the National Senior Games Association has designated March 18-24, 2024, as National Senior
Games Week; and
WHEREAS, Palo Alto recognizes the benefits Senior Games provide to participants and our entire community.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Greer Stone, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby recognized March 18-24, 2024
as National Senior Games Week in Palo Alto.
