Honoring Friends of Children with Special Needs
WHEREAS, Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization, was formed in 1996 by ten families of children with special needs to support one
another, share ideas, and educate the community about those with special needs; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, FCSN has connected and aided more than 800 multi-ethnic
families. With two centers, FCSN now provides 40+ comprehensive programs for special needs
individuals of all ages and their families; and
WHEREAS, FCSN provides information and assistance to children with special needs, adults
with special needs, and their communities, including opportunities for individuals to give back to
their community through volunteer work and jobs; and
WHEREAS, FCSN believes in the power of families helping families and promotes peer
support through its many programs and events; and
WHEREAS, since 1996, FCSN has reached many milestones and has been awarded over 20
Resolution of Commendations from public officials, including the California State Governor and
legislators, the Santa Clara County and Alameda County Boards of Supervisors, and City
Mayors and Council Members; and
WHEREAS, though a much larger organization today, FCSN started as a small family
support organization, and thus hopes to maintain the spirit of family in continuing to foster
collaboration among families, volunteers, and staff.
NOW, THEREFORE I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby honor and
congratulate Friends of Children with Special Needs on their many achievements in helping
individuals with special needs and their families find love, hope, respect, and support
through integrated community involvement.
