16th Anniversary of Shaolin Temple USA
WHEREAS, Shaolin Temple (established in 495 A.D.) is the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism
and Shaolin Kung Fu (martial arts); and
WHEREAS, Shaolin Temple USA is a nonprofit whose mission is to share Shaolin Kung Fu
Chan culture through the unique Shaolin disciplines of martial arts; and
WHEREAS, the Shaolin Temple USA’s Headquarters and Shaolin Cultural Center serve as
cultural, educational and training centers for the entire Bay Area region, including Palo Alto; and
WHEREAS, through classes, performances, community participation and special events, Shaolin
Temple USA has shared the martial arts skills and health benefits of Shaolin culture with people of
all ages and backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Shaolin Temple USA will welcome the Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin, head of the
Shaolin Temple of China, to the San Francisco Bay Area, and will host a Welcome Banquet in honor
of the Abbott’s visit; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, do hereby honor and
commend Shaolin Temple USA on its 16th anniversary, presented on the Second day of November,
Twenty Twenty-Three.
