WHEREAS, Eden Housing was founded in 1968 by a small Bay Area community group brought together
by a shared concern over the region’s lack of accessible and affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, Eden’s first multi-unit project was the 1973 development of the Josephine Lum Lodge in
Hayward to provide much-needed housing for low-income seniors; and
WHEREAS, Eden has since established itself as the leading nonprofit developer of affordable housing,
whose impact resonates throughout California. Eden has developed, acquired, and preserved almost 12,000
affordable homes to date, with over 4,000 more homes in the pipeline; and
WHEREAS, Eden is dedicated to core values that guide its work: to deliver with integrity, champion its
people, commit to equity and racial justice, promote economic justice, and commit for the long haul; and
WHEREAS, Eden’s innovative projects have garnered multiples awards, including the 2019 Governor’s
Historic Preservation Award, the 2017 Housing and Urban Development Secretary’s Housing and
Community Design Award, and the 2019 Gilroy Historical Society Architecture Award, among many
others; and
WHEREAS, Eden Housing is currently developing the Mitchell Park Place project in Palo Alto. This
inclusive project will create 50 units of affordable housing, half of which will serve individuals with
intellectual and developmental disabilities, and provide programming space for AbilityPath to deliver a full
range of support services for members of the intellectual and developmentally disabled community; and
NOW, THEREFORE I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council,
do hereby honor and congratulate Eden Housing on its 55th anniversary and commend it for its extraordinary
