HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-10-02 - Fire Prevention Week 2023 Proclamation Fire Prevention Week 2023 WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in, working in, and visiting the community; and WHEREAS, cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with nearly half of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries; unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and half of the related deaths; and WHEREAS, all household members should develop and practice a home fire escape plan that includes two exits from every room in the home; a path to the outside from each exit; smoke alarms in all required locations; and a meeting place outside where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto Fire Department first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and education; and WHEREAS, the 2023 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention” effectively serves to educate the public about simple but necessary steps they can take to help reduce the risk of fire when cooking at home, keeping themselves and those around them safe. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim October 8-14, 2023, as Fire Prevention Week throughout this community and urge all the people of Palo Alto to participate in the many public safety activities and efforts of the City of Palo Alto Fire and Emergency Services during Fire Prevention Week 2023.
