Proclamation
INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY 2023
WHEREAS, August 15th annually commemorates India’s freedom from British colonial rule in 1947 and is a
historic milestone in India’s history, ending nearly two centuries of British rule and granting the nation the right
to self-govern and determine its destiny; and
WHEREAS, this day symbolizes the end of a challenging fight for freedom, led by iconic figures like
Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and Subhash Chandra Bose. It remains a pivotal moment in Indian history, honoring
nonviolent civil disobedience and leadership; and
WHEREAS, it also honors the sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters who struggled, protested, and
even gave their lives for India’s freedom. Their dedication and resilience are remembered and celebrated on this
day; and
WHEREAS, in the year 2023, India celebrates its 77th Independence Day, marking 76 years of freedom and
bringing people from diverse backgrounds, including Hinduism, together as one nation. It reinforces the idea of
unity in diversity, highlighting that India is a land of many cultures, languages, and religions, all united under
the Indian flag; and
WHEREAS, India’s independence underscores the core democratic values that India upholds by adopting a
democratic system of governance, with its Constitution guaranteeing fundamental rights and equality for all
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Indian American organizations and individuals actively engage in seva (selfless service),
through charity, public service, and free social services; and
WHEREAS, Indian Americans have contributed to economic vitality, growth, and wellbeing, in business,
law, politics, information technology, medicine, and science; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has welcomed all South Asians, including Hindus, from across the world
who are free to practice their religion or beliefs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of
the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim against bigotry, including Hinduphobia, and recognize this
important step in bridging divisions to heal and strengthen communities. Let us renew our commitment to a
future filled with unity, growth, and prosperity by honoring our past while embracing the promises of tomorrow.
