MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
May 2023
WHEREAS, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the City of Palo Alto recognizes that
mental health is important for our individual well-being and vitality, as well as that of our families,
communities, and businesses; and
WHEREAS, we are all impacted by mental health, and one-in-five adults and one-in-four children
experience a mental health condition each year; and
WHEREAS, individuals and families living with mental health concerns share with all community
members a right to fair and equitable practices and community processes in pursuit of education,
housing, and employment; and
WHEREAS, we acknowledge the influence of stigma and cultural differences and the ways they
can impact if, how, and when a person seeks help. We also recognize that stigma can contribute to
some misunderstandings about mental health that can span generations and cultures; and
WHEREAS, the commitment must begin at the local community level to increase awareness,
replace misinformation and eliminate stigma about mental health struggles, and promote the
understanding that people living with mental health conditions can and do lead productive and
satisfying lives.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of the entire City
Council do hereby proclaim the month of May to be Mental Health Awareness Month and recommit
our community to increasing awareness and understanding around mental health, reducing stigma and
discrimination, and promoting appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health
conditions.
