HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-05-08 - Mental Health Awareness MonthProclamation __________________________ Lydia Kou Mayor MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH May 2023 WHEREAS, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the City of Palo Alto recognizes that mental health is important for our individual well-being and vitality, as well as that of our families, communities, and businesses; and WHEREAS, we are all impacted by mental health, and one-in-five adults and one-in-four children experience a mental health condition each year; and WHEREAS, individuals and families living with mental health concerns share with all community members a right to fair and equitable practices and community processes in pursuit of education, housing, and employment; and WHEREAS, we acknowledge the influence of stigma and cultural differences and the ways they can impact if, how, and when a person seeks help. We also recognize that stigma can contribute to some misunderstandings about mental health that can span generations and cultures; and WHEREAS, the commitment must begin at the local community level to increase awareness, replace misinformation and eliminate stigma about mental health struggles, and promote the understanding that people living with mental health conditions can and do lead productive and satisfying lives. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of the entire City Council do hereby proclaim the month of May to be Mental Health Awareness Month and recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding around mental health, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions.
