HONORING LORETTA GREEN
WHEREAS, Loretta Green is a Palo Alto resident of more than fifty years; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green applied her life-long affection for words and their power as a longtime feature writer
and columnist for the Palo Alto Times, the Peninsula Times Tribune and the San Jose Mercury News; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green’s stories while on assignment in Africa, brought the plight of starving Ethiopians to
Peninsulans and inspired life-saving donations; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green was known as the voice of the community due to her human interest stories and the rare
combination of having a great eye for news as well as being a great story teller; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green’s gracious and elegant writing style and long-time commitment to community
demonstrated through her writing and sentiment of the public have served to inspire others; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green has won many professional awards including recognition from The Associated Press,
the Peninsula Press Club, the Association of California Newspaper Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, and
has been inducted into the Black Legend Hall of Fame Award of Silicon Valley in the News and Documentary
Category, an award that bears her name; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green has also received numerous additional awards such as the Palo Alto Chamber of
Commerce’s “Tall Tree Award”, then-Assemblyman Joe Simitian’s “21st District’s Woman of the Year”, the Athena
award which is given to “honor exceptional woman leaders who demonstrate the highest levels of professional
excellence, give back to their communities and, most importantly, assist other women in realizing their full leadership
potential”, the Mid-Peninsula YWCA’s outstanding Black Woman Award, the East Palo Alto Teen Home Positive
Image Award, and the Career Action Center’s Woman of Vision Award, Mid-Peninsula YWCA’s Outstanding Black
Woman Award, the East Palo Alto Teen Home Positive Image Award, and the Career Action Center’s Woman of
Vision Award, and most recently has been recognized by Avenidas’ “Lifetimes of Achievement”; and
WHEREAS, Loretta Green has served on the Stanford Hospital Board of Directors, the Museum of American
Heritage Board, and as a senior fellow at the American Leadership Forum of Silicon Valley and as a longtime volunteer
at the Mid-Peninsula Girls Club in East Menlo Park,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lydia Kou, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto on behalf of the entire City Council do hereby
record and express sincere thanks and appreciation to Loretta Green for sharing her elegantly professional writings and
for her numerous contributions made during her years of community service and leadership.
PRESENTED: February 27, 2023
