HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-10-14 - Leyte Sister City RelationsProclamation __________________________ Patrick Burt Mayor HONORING THE COMPLETION OF 59 YEARS OF SISTER CITY RELATIONS WITH THE CITY OF LEYTE, PHILIPPINES, AND CONGRATULATING MAYOR REMEDIOS “MATIN” PETILLA ON HER RECENT INAUGURATION AS MAYOR WHEREAS, the Municipality of Palo, Leyte Province Philippines and City of Palo Alto, California have been active Sister Cities since 1963, and WHEREAS, Neighbors Abroad on behalf of the City of Palo Alto raised monies and supported the construction and operation of a children’s library, a library that has been supported for twenty-seven years, and WHEREAS, Neighbors Abroad in 1999 invited then Governor Remedios L. Petilla to study and observe science centers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The impact of these visits facilitated the recent opening of the Eastern Visayas Science Centrum in Palo with continued donations of STEM materials for children and youths by Neighbors Abroad, and WHEREAS, Palo Alto residents Ruth and Joe Carleton were instrumental in sending three medical missions in 2000, 2001 and 2003 that benefited through life-changing surgeries to hundreds of children with cleft lips and cleft palates, and WHEREAS, scholarship of students has been supported via Neighbors Abroad via the GIANTS Club of Palo Foundation enabling college education of young adults, and WHEREAS, each Sister City has enacted climate action plans and resilience strategies to both limit sea level rise as well as mitigate the impact of climate change, and WHEREAS, opportunities for collaboration and carbon mitigation strategies can be developed in cooperation with other Sister Cities, and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Patrick Burt, Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, on behalf of the City Council do extend our greetings as our official Sister City organization, Neighbors Abroad, represents our commitment to 59 years of multi-generational engagement as Sister Cities. We extend our commitment to the children’s health and education, to reducing climate impact and building resiliency, and toward collaborations on art that inspires all our community. I record our congratulations to Mayor Remedios “Matin” Petilla on your term as Mayor. PRESENTED: October 14, 2022
